Is Generative AI the Equalizer for Inexperienced Workers?
Generative artificial intelligence, commonly lauded for its high-end applications like passing the bar exam or assisting top CEOs, is now showing potential in more foundational roles.
A recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology study suggests that those at the beginner stage of their professional journey stand to benefit the most.
In a collaborative effort, MIT Sloan associate professor Danielle Li, PhD candidate Lindsey Raymond, and Stanford University professor Erik Brynjolfsson explored how generative AI impacts inexperienced workers.
Their findings? As a result, it proves beneficial in unexpected ways.
Contact center agents, when armed with a conversational AI, experienced a 14% boost in productivity. Significantly, the most profound impacts were observed among newcomers or those with fewer skills. The AI did not replace them but empowered them.
This technology differs from traditional automation.
While conventional tech functions based on explicit instructions, generative AI, especially large language models, understands and infers relationships between data. Thus, in a contact center, instead of merely auto-completing a message, generative AI changes the entire approach to customer engagement, leading to higher resolution rates and better customer sentiment.
However, the study also unveils some pressing questions.
Who truly benefits from these gains in productivity?
Does this make the workers' role more meaningful, or are they relegated to merely following AI recommendations without genuine understanding?
Key Learnings
Generative AI can upscale, not replace, especially less-experienced workers.
Such AI tools can revolutionize communication methods, enhancing customer engagement.
However, the role of human touch, understanding, and the potential of becoming over-reliant on technology needs to be balanced.
Does generative AI act as a stepping stone or a crutch for inexperienced workers?
